Frequently Answered Questions

Definitions

What are Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, instead using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. This innovative technique allows plants to grow faster and healthier, as they receive exactly the nutrients they need, directly to their roots.

Hydroponics can be used to grow a wide variety of plants, including vegetables, fruits, and flowers. It's an excellent choice for those who want to maximize their yield in a limited space, or for those who live in areas with poor soil quality.

At Future Harvest, we cater to all: the New Grower exploring hydroponics, the Experienced Grower perfecting their craft, and the Commercial Grower scaling operations. Trust in our quality products, tailored for every stage of your growing journey.

What are Chelates?

Chelates are organic compounds used in hydroponic nutrients to enhance the availability and stability of essential micronutrients like iron, zinc, and copper. Chelates form complexes with these micronutrients, preventing them from becoming unavailable or reacting with other elements in the solution.

What does NPK mean?

NPK stands for the three essential elements found in most fertilizers: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). These numbers represent the percentage of each nutrient in the fertilizer, indicating the nutrient ratio to support different stages of plant growth.

What does PPM mean?

PPM stands for "Parts Per Million," which is a unit of measurement used to express the concentration of nutrients or other substances in a hydroponic nutrient solution. It indicates the number of parts of a substance present in one million parts of the solution.

What does TDS mean?

TDS "Total Disolved Solids" refers to the measurement of all dissolved substances, including minerals, salts, and organic compounds, in a hydroponic nutrient solution. It is expressed in parts per million (PPM) and indicates the total nutrient concentration.

What does EC mean?

EC stands for "Electrical Conductivity" and is a measure of the nutrient concentration in a hydroponic solution. It assesses the ability of the solution to conduct an electrical current. EC is used to determine the strength of the nutrient solution and ensure it is within the desired range for optimal plant growth.

Basics

How do I properly store Future Harvest products?

Properly storing Future Harvest products is crucial to maintain their effectiveness and longevity. Both liquid and powdered products should be stored in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure that the packages are tightly sealed after each use to prevent air exposure.

It is recommended to use the nutrients within their specified shelf life to ensure optimal performance. Following these storage practices will help preserve the quality and efficacy of Future Harvest nutrients.

What is the optimal water temperature for hydroponic growing?

Oxygen is less available at higher temperatures. This is why we recommend you keep your water temperature between 68°F – 75°F (20°C – 24°C) for optimal growing conditions.

How often should I water my plants in a hydroponic system?

In a hydroponic system, it is essential to monitor the moisture levels of the growing medium. Watering frequency may vary depending on factors like plant type, growth stage, and environmental conditions. Aim to keep the growing medium evenly moist, but not waterlogged, to support healthy plant growth.

Can I use hydroponic nutrients for both indoor and outdoor gardening?

Yes, hydroponic nutrients from Future Harvest are suitable for both indoor and outdoor gardening. The nutrient formulations are designed to provide plants with the essential elements they need, regardless of the growing environment.

How do I adjust nutrient levels for different stages of plant growth in hydroponics?

Adjusting nutrient levels in hydroponics involves increasing nutrient concentrations during the vegetative phase to promote leafy growth and decreasing them during the flowering phase to encourage blooming. Follow the recommended feeding schedules provided by Future Harvest for best results.

Our Nutrient Calculator can help guide you through customizing your grow beyond our feeding schedule guidlines.

How do I feed my plants during the dark hours of my light cycle in hydroponics?

In hydroponics, it is best not to feed the plants during the dark hours of the light cycle. Provide nutrient solution only when the lights are on to optimize nutrient absorption and avoid potential issues with root zone conditions during the dark period.

How do I determine the appropriate nutrient strength for my hydroponic plants?

The appropriate nutrient strength for hydroponic plants depends on factors like plant type, growth stage, and environmental conditions. Use a TDS/EC meter to measure the nutrient strength and adjust it to the recommended levels based on the stage of growth.
